Autumn Hair Loss Demystified: Tips to Tackle Hair-Shedding Season

Why Does My Hair Fall Out More in Autumn?

As the leaves start to fall and the air turns crisp, you might notice something else dropping – your hair. Autumn hair loss shedding is a common occurrence for many people. But don’t panic; it’s usually a natural part of the seasonal cycle.

Seasonal Shedding Explained

Do you notice seasonal shedding? It is common for women to lose more hair at the end of the Summer and into the Autumn months. Hair growth spends more time in its resting phase. It’s believed to be in our genetic make-up and harks back to hair being a sun protection layer for us in our caveman days!

During the transition from summer to autumn, our bodies adjust to the changing environment. This adjustment can affect our hair growth cycle. Hair follicles have a growth phase, a rest phase, and a shedding phase. The shift in seasons can trigger more hairs to enter the shedding phase, leading to increased hair fall.

But before you grab your hairbrush in distress, remember that this is typically a temporary and self-correcting phenomenon. It’s your body’s way of making room for new hair growth adapted to the colder weather. In most cases, the hair you lose during autumn will be replaced over time.

How Long Does Seasonal Hair Shedding Last?

Changes in temperature and humidity levels can also impact hair health. From cold winter winds, autumn drizzle to summer scorching, these all have environmental impact on the health of your hair.

However, seasonal hair loss is usually temporary and should not cause any concern unless it persists beyond a few months.

How Can I Minimise Seasonal Hair Loss?

If you are seeing a little more hair loss than usual, then don’t panic. Ultimately, you can help keep shedding to a minimum by following this advice…

* Avoid mechanical damage by avoiding excessive brushing. Combing your hair in the shower whilst conditioning is the kindest brushing you can do using a tangle teezer or wide-toothed comb.

* Avoid using elastic hair bands. We see a lot of mid length breakage, and often this is where people repeatedly tie their hair into a ponytail. Switch to silk scrunchies or aim to wear your hair down more often.

* Avoid pulling your hair up into a tight hairstyle. The tension encourages hair loss prematurely. We definitely advise you avoid repeatedly tying your hair tightly into the same style. We often see loss of hair at the temples, where hair has been pulled into a tight high ponytail again and again.

* Avoid over-shampooing. Washing your hair too often can result in your natural oils being stripped, which play a huge part in a healthy scalp.

* Stay hydrated. Increasing your daily water intake can help with seasonal hair shedding as it keeps the hair follicle nourished and your hair healthy and shiny.

* Eat healthily, ensuring you have the right balance of food groups. We are what we eat!

*Manage stress – consider what works for you when you find yourself under stress. We find that deep breathing, exercise, fresh air or just taking a bit of me-time works for many of us.
